John was called to the bar in British Columbia (2010) and Ontario (2007) and practices civil, criminal, and regulatory litigation. He has appeared as counsel before the Ontario and British Columbia Courts of Appeal and the Superior Courts of British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. He regularly appears as counsel in adult and youth criminal matters in BC Provincial Court.
John was a law clerk to the Honourable Robert Decary of the Federal Court of Appeal in Ottawa. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) from Simon Fraser University and his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law. While with SFU he was a member of the men's varsity swim team.
John’s civil practice focuses on commercial litigation and personal injury cases, including products liability involving automobiles and defective medical devices. A sample of recent cases includes:
· Gosling v. Ford Motor Company (USA) - allegation of design and testing negligence involving rollover and stearing stability and roof strength in the Ford Explorer
· Wakelem v. Johnson & Johnson and others - class action allegating that the drug manufacturer defendants' sale of cough medicine for use in children under the age of 6 violated the deceptive practices provisions of the British Columbia Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act
· Burnett v. St. Jude Medical Inc. - appeal in the British Columbia Court of Appeal representing the objectors to a settlement in a class action alleging the sale of defective heart valve devices
John is a member of the following organizations:
