Associate – Family Lawyer

Hamilton Duncan is one of the Fraser Valley’s largest and most well-established law firms, boasting a team of more than 30 talented lawyers and 70 excellent support staff. With a principal office in Surrey – one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada – and a newly established office in Downtown Vancouver, we provide high-end legal services to a wide variety of clients in an assortment of engaging and challenging matters across diverse areas of practice.

We pride ourselves on a commitment to our community and our collegial workplace. We want people who value a culture and management style that fosters collaboration and respect while rewarding individual responsibility, initiative and creativity and providing opportunities for further development.

Our developing family law practice group deals with all manner of issues that regularly arise in the family context, including the preparation and review of marriage contracts, cohabitation agreements and separation agreements; contested and uncontested divorces; issues pertaining to custody and parenting arrangements; child and spousal support; the division of property under the Family Law Act and many others. As one of the largest firms in the Fraser Valley, and one with a commitment to building our relatively new practice in this area in our well-established market, we offer a great opportunity for the right person to develop a sizeable practice.

We are looking for a lawyer with at least five years of family law experience who will work out of our main Surrey location. More experienced applicants with a full or partial portable practice are also invited to apply.

Our ideal applicant:

  • must have a solid working knowledge of the Divorce Act, the Family Law Act and other applicable statutes as well as applicable court rules and procedures such as the Supreme Court Family Rules and the Provincial Court Family Rules;
  • will have excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, superior organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to handle a high volume of work with tight deadlines and exceptional attention to detail;
  • is comfortable with and driven by solving complicated problems while demonstrating creativity, thoughtfulness, diligence and remaining calm under pressure;
  • is self-motivated and works well both independently and as part of a team; and
  • will embrace the opportunity to build strong relationships and to work towards developing this area of practice for the firm and maintaining a practice of their own.

We ask a lot of our people, so we try to give a lot in return. In addition to a competitive compensation package, we think you’ll love these other benefits of working at Hamilton Duncan:

  • Health and wellness: Take care of yourself and your family with our comprehensive benefits plan that includes extended medical, dental, vision, critical illness, and life insurance coverages, as well as an employee assistance program for those trying times and a fitness reimbursement plan.
  • Work Location: Both of our offices are highly accessible by Skytrain and are close to several major commuter routes, making getting to the office a breeze, and we pride ourselves on the use of technology allowing for seamless remote work.
